Word of light Ministry

All of this began around 2008 when all of our staff began working in a ministry located in downtown Juarez.  This outreach was also held on Saturdays and was very similar to what we are doing now.  The downtown ministry ended in 2015,  but there were three of us who wanted to start our own ministry.  One of our workers lived in a condominium/apartment complex called Eco 2000 located in far east Juarez,  and she wanted to start an outreach there since there was an abundance of children living in the complex.  So, in May of 2016,  Word of Light came into existence.  We set up a picnic table in the parking lot of Eco 2000 and began serving the youth living there.  After about five months, we were able to purchase one of the apartments in the complex and we moved in. We have been there ever since.  Everyone living in Eco 2000 is a squatter.  Apparently, after construction, the complex owners went bankrupt,  and everyone living there had to move out, but it wasn't long before people started moving in as squatters. Our apartment was purchased from a tenant for the princely sum of $1,000.00.

We invite neighborhood kids to come on Saturdays,  where we praise God, present the Gospel through a lesson,  serve a meal, and play outside (usually jump rope and soccer). Prior to the pandemic, we were seeing about 15 kids every week.  After the pandemic, our numbers went down, but we're back up to about 12-14 on a good Saturday.  We are now also offering an adult Bible study after the kids leave.  The whole thing takes about 3 1/2 to 4 hours.  We also reach out to the community where there are needs.  This Christmas ( thanks to the Church of the Good Shepherd )  we gave out bags of food staples to our needy residents.

Eco 2000 can be a very dark and unforgiving place, but we are serving God and giving people, especially young people, an opportunity to come to the light of Christ and to grow spiritually.  I want to thank the members of the Good Shepherd for coming alongside us and assisting us in our work.  Your help has been much appreciated.

                                                                                                                                                                                    Bill
